The Seton Health Center for Smoking Cessation is offering “The Butt Stops Here: Extended Program,” a support group for those who want to quit smoking or for those who have already quit. The next series begins Monday, January 9 and meets every week until April 9 at St. Mary’s Hospital,
According to the Public Health Service Guideline for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence, tobacco dependence can lead to symptoms of chronic disease. Only a minority of tobacco users achieves permanent abstinence in an initial quit attempt and the majorities of users persist in tobacco use for many years cycling through multiple periods of remission and relapse.
“This program will accommodate those smokers who struggle to become or remain abstinent,” said Peggy Keigley, Director, Seton Health’s Center for Smoking Cessation. “Research demonstrates that group support combined with a smoking cessation medication can increase quit rates to 30% or more.”
“The Butt Stops Here” program was founded in 2001. It is a cessation support program with open enrollment to help people quit smoking. To date it has conducted over 430 groups and treated approximately 7,000 participants of which 30% have quit smoking. A weekly support group program was designed for those who want more help with quitting. The new extended program offers greater flexibility and on-going support for a longer period of time. The program costs $40, but is free for Medicaid recipients and those with CDPHP health insurance.
Nicotine replacement therapy is available in the form of nicotine patches or gum. Space is limited and registrations are required. To sign up for the program, or for more information about “The Butt Stops Here” program, please call Debbie Keefe, program coordinator, at (518) 459-2550.
