Seton Health Physical Rehabilitation Therapists Earn McKenzie Institute Certification
TROY, N.Y. – Seton Health’s Joyce Boardman, PT, Cert. MDT, and Maureen Clancy, MSPT, DPT, OCS, Cert. MDT recently became certified in the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT). The McKenzie Method is a comprehensive approach to back and neck pain that involves three components: evaluation, treatment and prevention.
The McKenzie Method is an active patient treatment philosophy that emphasizes prevention and intervention and encourages patients to have control of their own treatment. The physical therapist evaluates the patient’s condition to determine if they are a candidate for MDT. Patients are then educated on self-treatment and if able, allowed to manage their own pain, reducing the number of trips to a therapist. Certified McKenzie MDT practitioners must participate in educational updates every three years to remain current with practice trends and enhance their skills.
“Many patients we see in physical therapy have a diagnosis of neck or low back pain,” said Holly Klingenberg, PT, DPT, director of Seton Health Physical Rehabilitation. “Having McKenzie therapists at each of our three locations allows both the patient and referring physician to have confidence that pain will be reduced quickly, returning the patient to their daily activities.”
